In 2006 I was asked to try my hand at creating some concept sketches
for the new Averex watch line. This is something I had never attempted
before, but really looked forward to the challenge. I have always admired
the area of
Industrial Design, and I was eager to get to work.
It is my opinion that ID, when done well, should represent the perfect
union between art and utility. Perhaps even more than the field of
architecture, ID represents the closest vertex of form and functionality;
go too far in either direction and you've blown it.
Being a fairly casual experiment, I decided not to over think things, to
avoid constricting my creativity, to see where my pencil and mouse led me.
I found early on that my natural inclination was to veer away from boilerplate
watch design and toward a "bottom up" approach. I also found myself
producing drawings with an undeniable outdoor sports aesthetic,
probably informed by my then newly manifested interest in kayaking
and rock climbing. I also found myself dealing with shapes that, I think,
are interesting as objects and possess an inherent tactile quality.
Since this project I have continued to experiment with watch design.
My later sketches have moved away from the outdoors sportiness of the
original conceptions, but I have held on to the solid weightiness in my
designs.
